Runway Relief – Here Comes the Hot Stepper!
Posted on August 16, 2010 - Filed Under Charity, Nigel Barker's Beauty Equation, Photography

New York Fashion week is only a few weeks away, and this season I have teamed up with Nine West to shoot the ‘Runway Relief’ campaign to raise awareness for the CFDA’s charity: ‘Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.’ You might remember I worked on a similar campaign last year with the lovely Veronica Webb and QVC. Well this time around, we have a whole host of superstar models stepping up to take part in the project.
The idea is to raise awareness and money for FTBC by sponsoring models during fashion week as they run from one show to another, back stage, on stage, at parties and at castings. How ? – Well all the models will be wearing fabulous boots designed by Nine West with pedometers installed in the front. The pedometers will count every step the girls take, and we can sponsor either every step they take or just make a donation backing our favorite girl at www.modelinia.com/ninewestrunwayrelief.
So just to get a sense of the whole project, I met up with 3 of the models – Coco Rocha, Jessica White and Lisalla Montenegro – to try on the boots, other Nine West swag and capture a few pre-press shots. My friends at Sony are also giving each model a Sony Bloggie to video themselves on the road or runway, keeping us up to date with every step.
The big launch is on August 31st here in NYC, where we will shoot the grand campaign shots with around 40 models from IMG, Marilyn, Next and Elite. Yes, that’s right, a virtual model army marching to raise money. And if you can’t make it to the shoot (yes, we are inviting everyone to come and support!), you can view a live stream of my photo shoot on Nine West’s Facebook page. You can also log on to www.modelinia.com or www.NineWest.com and sign up for a chance to win the boot beginning August 31st.
As I said, the public is invited to attend the shoot in the Meatpacking District in NYC, and the first 10 people who attend will win a pair of the limited edition boots, and the first 25 people after that will win a signed copy of my new book, ‘Nigel Barker’s Beauty Equation’ (a day before it goes on general release!!). See you on the 31st, and don’t be late!
Check out the photos of the models shot on my Sony A900, and the behind-the-scenes shots taken on the Sony NEX-5. Also, be sure to check out our interview with The Associate Press.

Pamella Roland, Fall 2010 Ad Campaign…
Posted on July 26, 2010 - Filed Under Photography, Studio NB

Coming out this fall, in a variety of the fashion mags like Harper’s Bazaar and Town & Country, are the latest advertising shots from the House of Pamella Roland. I photographed Pamella’s daughters for the campaign, but this season, along with their personal friends and boyfriends to showcase a smashing new collection that evokes the fun and excitement the Pamella Roland brand is all about. Not just is the collection sexy and feminine, but also glamorous and chic. All the ladies in the photos you see are friends, not hired models, ranging in height from 5′1” to 5′8”, proving that everyone looks stunning in Pamella Roland. Check out the campaign in the gallery below, and if you want to see behind-the-scenes footage, check out our previous post here.
Human(e)

On Friday night, we traveled to Washington DC for the annual TAFA event hosted by the HSUS. It’s a great event, bringing together the top minds in animal rights activism with a series of workshops, presentations and speeches from authors, politicians and even comedians and reality TV show judges……! My presentation, titled ‘Human(e),’ was well received, and I was honored with an impromptu standing ovation – always nice! The basic message is one that the Humane Society of the United States whole-heartedly agrees with: To truly be humane, you need to be considerate and compassionate to all of the animal kingdom, including ourselves. We as a species are not advanced just because we are more intelligent and creative, but because we have the potential and the ability to be humane.
I discussed my work with the Protect Shark campaign and the Protect Seal Campaign to clearly emphasize my point. For example, sharks don’t hunt us down in organized groups, as the movies Jaws and Deep Blue Sea would have you believe. They also wouldn’t specifically bite off your hand and let you drift off to bleed to death while your dismembered part is being served as an aphrodisiac in a steaming, hot bowl of soup. Oh, wait a second. That’s what we do! Shark fin soup, anyone? Certainly, sharks don’t go out searching for the largest human they can kill only to bring it back to the their dock, hang it and quarter it in front of a jeering crowd of hammerheads. That would be horrific! But wait a second, isn’t that what we do during Monster Shark tournaments? Now as for what some humans are willing to do to baby seals… well, do I really need to? Search my blog under HSUS to read more on that. My point isn’t just to question our validity as a humane species, but rather, it is to encourage everyone to see how appalling we behave all too often at the expense of innocent creatures. Get Low!

Last week was chock-a-block with activities, including one of my favorite events, the movie screenings put on by the Cinema Society. As luck would have it, I was invited to the screening of a fabulous new film called ‘Get Low.’ It’s a Sony Pictures Classics flick directed by Aaron Schneider starring Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Bill Murray. The event itself was sponsored by none other than the NEX-5, my favorite new camera that I haven’t put down in a month. In fact, I took mine with me to the show! Simply put, this film is everything I love in a classic – incredible acting with a simple, yet poignant storyline that relies on the true abilities of all involved rather than the post-production wonders of digital manipulation. It made me both cry and laugh out loud – GO SEE IT!

Think Dudley Moore, NOT Knights of the Round Table, as you might with my being English and all that! So fresh off the plane after wrapping up Cycle 15 of ANTM at our secret location, I found myself in front of another set of very large cameras, but this time, it was to play myself as a cameo. That’s right! My first cameo in an actual movie… and with several lines no less! I’m still terribly excited, as you can tell. And no wonder, I “acted” alongside Russell Brand, Jennifer Garner, Nick Nolte and Geraldine James. Not only was I asked to perform a masterly rendition of myself, but I also took simultaneous photos of the cast for a photo-shoot scene that takes place within the remake. Sounds like I’d be right at home, and I was, except that while taking photos, I also had to remember to chime in with my lines and follow my blocking. Even more exciting, the actual shots taken during the scene will be used later in the flick!
It was a sweltering 95 degrees in the shade that day, and the whole ensemble was suited and booted, some even riding horses, so you can just imagine. I kept it together by singing “Best That You Can Be” in my head by Christopher Cross…. I’m not allowed to give anything away or show any of the stars in my behind-the scenes snaps, but look out for the movie, which will be on general release in 2011 through Warner Brothers.
