So, about me………..
As a child I grew up in a family with 5 siblings from a total of three
marriages, each one of us totally different characters with a
multitude of dreams and wishes. I was born in London and lived there
until I was eighteen. I did however go to a couple of boarding schools
in the Countryside from the age of eight to eighteen so my youth
wasn’t a totally urban one.
However growing up in London in the 70s and 80s did shape my creative
vision and out look on life as it was the best and worst of times. Big
hair, excess and bourgeois of the 80s juxtaposed with the punk/mod,
coal mining strikes and incoming conservative government of the 70s.
Recession followed by a boom
At Bryanston, my boarding school, my main studies were in Chemistry,
Physics and Biology. I was also able to study dress making and pattern
cutting in my own time as an extra curricular activity. I was the only
boy in the class, which at first led to quite a bit of mockery from my
school friends until they realized that I had this special time with
all the prettiest girls at school, and the girls actually respected me
for doing it. I loved it and was awarded the designers cup in my final
year of sixth form. The first time a boy had won it! During that time
I also designed a women’s hat which sold on the British high streets.
The more involved in fashion I got the more I loved it. All the while
I was practicing my camera techniques. I used to shoot school events
and buddies of mine using just raw light bulbs….. the results were
often pretty freakish but it was great training and there is no real
wrong way to light something just different, sometimes ugly but……
It was in my final year of school that my Mother entered me into a
televised model contest called the Clothes Show. It was one of the
first of it’s kind if not the first that wasn’t a pageant.

I was
selected out of 5000 wannabes to be a finalist and lucky for me, I
made it to the final 3. So I decided to try my hand at modeling during
my gap year. I thought I would give it a year before going to Med
school, make some money, travel a little bit…… little did I know I
had opened a Pandora’s box which was to be my life. One year ended up
being 8, I never particularly loved modeling but it was a ways to a
means. I was working and living with creative personalities and
traveling the world in style. It was funny as I was never the most
financially successful of my brothers or of my close friends, most of
whom were in the financial worlds. But I believe I have been and
continue to be one of the happiest people I know.
I have lived and worked in London, Paris, Milan, Hamburg, Munich,
Madrid, Athens, Los Angeles, Miami and New York where I ultimately
settled down and made my home. Of course falling in love on the way
was par for the course but luckily for me it was with the girl of my
dreams and we are happily married to this day ( 13 years ) with a son
called Jack.
It was in 1998 that I made the switch from model to photographer full
time. I had been moon lighting as a test photographer for a few years
already getting my technique
down. I found that it helped me work with the models, knowing what it
was like to have been one of them. It is a certain empathy I guess
that I have with my subjects. I still step in front of the lens just
to feel the light every now and then.
I opened Studio NB in 1998. I wanted my own photo studio even though
it was a financial burden as I loved the idea of having a creative
space dedicated to your work. And I always admired the likes of Andy
Warhol and David LaChapelle who had studios that attracted the freaks
and kooks the fashion industry cherishes.
It is amazing how a simple studio space can morph into so many
different incarnations. That blank canvas always excites me, whether
it be a freshly painted white cyc, a new model or plain raw talent.
One of those amazing things about the fashion and advertising industry
is it’s ability to reinvent itself. Every season something new, how do
you stay relevant? How do you attract the attention of the public? And
more importantly how do you get them to invest in you and your
product, time and time again? Having a big brand name can no doubt
bring cache but name alone will not guarantee longevity. We have all
seen many top brands driven into the ground by complacency and
unimaginative creative.
It was those first few years setting up as a photographer that I felt
like I was truly living. When you have a job that makes the hair on
the back of your neck stand on end, wakes you up in the middle of the
night inspired, stops you going to sleep excited and means putting in
15-16 hour days – no problem….. then you know you are on to
something! Crissy, my wife and I would work 7 days a week from waking
to sleeping at work, although it seemed like at play. Photography for
most people is a hobby, something they dabble in on vacation or just a
way to document life. The fact I could and actually do it for a job is
a blessing. Of course not without hard work and sacrifice but then
that’s everyone’s story.
My first fashion story I had published was for Paper Magazine. Famed
Stylist Timothy Reukauf put together an amazing ensemble of clothing
that was inspired by Amadeus, Ken Doll, John Travolta and Versace…..
The story was met with great reviews and I had calls from Jill Sander
and Visionaire Magazine straight off the press.
Well after a few more stories for Paper and shoots for Interview and
GQ I was asked by Tyra Banks and Jay Manual to shoot an episode of
“America’s Next Top Model”
Now I remember when my friend Nole Marin who hooked up the whole thing
asked me to submit my work and get involved as a photographer only. I
thought here’s an opportunity to combine my experience from both sides
of the lens. I had to show them I was worthy as a photographer (and
luckily for me my portfolios did the talking) and I had to be
stimulating in front of the camera. Fortunately it all came together
and I was asked to shoot for ANTM. A couple of weeks later a call came
through from production asking
whether I would consider a more permanent position as “Judge” and
photographer on panel. Well the rest is history as they say………
Working on America’s Next Top Model has been and continues to be an
amazing experience for me. Everyone involved with the show has been
happily surprised with the runaway success. ANTM is now playing in 117
countries with 44 versions being done like “The Philippines Next Top
Model” ! I’ve seen 91 contestants over 8 seasons and we have another
4 seasons in the works………
As a photographer my assignments have taken me all around the world in
the past 12 months we have been to the UK, Spain, Morocco, Hong Kong,
Thailand, South Africa and we live and work in Los Angeles and New
York. So you get a true feeling of what’s going on globally in the
fashion world and how different countries handle advertising. Not to
mention the travel is fun-!!

I don’t know much about photography but I love the photos that I have seen you take to ANTM. Also, I can’t believe you were going to go to med school. I am in med school now and I always think about how different my life might be if I didn’t take this path. Like you said you seem very happy with the path you took and I think that is very cool.
Nigel, i also studied Physics Chemistry and Biology after completeing my A’Levels in East Africa with dreams of going to Medical school i moved to the US and here i am now a photographer
cheers mate

Hi Nigel,
Great site… nice job… big fan… totally hooked on ANTM.
I’m a Stylist [props mostly, some wardrobe (Lands End! & Lands End Kids & others) and a little food on occasion]. I’d love to see the shots from your first fashion story for Paper Magazine. It sounds like such an interesting concept. Any chance you’d post them? Or email them to an interested co-industry professional like myself?
Would love to meet you (and your georgeous family too) if ever you are in LA with time.
No pun intented… but your life seems “picture perfect”… you are blessed my friend… continued happiness and success.
Best, Mel

eres muy guapo y haces un buen trabajo en american next top model felicidades sigue asi
Your story is really inspiring! I attended your brief talk when you visted Manila. I love David LaChapelle’s work too.’
Looking forward to more of your interesting posts
Great tutorial.
I floated over here after watching another America’s Next Top Model marathon on VH1 and wanting to learn more about the photography in the show, etc.
I find it very interesting that you were in school studying to be a doctor before finding your career in fashion. I’m actually in a place where I need to decide between a career in the health care industry, or one in art. The one thing keeping me from going in to art (photography or design to be more specific) is job security. I don’t know that I’m good enough to be able to support myself in the industry.
What would be your advice to someone like me who is struggling to support themselves, but has that creative part of their personality that burns hot?
Thank you!u
excellent!a
Hallo Nigel
Here is Louise from Denmark, just to tell you that you are a very nice man and your wife is a very lucky woman. I always watch antm and my little girl jasmin (3 years old) also like it very much.
So keep on the good work, and again you are very nice looking man (-:
Kiss from Denmark
Hi Nigel, i’m not your biggest fan, but i definitively i love and respect your work, also i have to say that is very interesting the path you took before entering to the fashion industry, and the fact that you change the side- from model to photographer. So all i have to say is Congratulations! your doing a great job, -obviously i think you know- . Oh!! and i almost forget to say…. you’re really hot jaj. Greetings from Mexico.!
PS. My english is a little rusty! 0_-
your slowly being my model as of this moment.
i did go to medical school too, and while am studying college i did join our school publication. Our adviser appointed me as news editor and publication artist. Then after a year they did appointed me as the sports editor. and in our school paper.. i did have a dose of PHOTOgraPhy. I really like photojournalism and stuff like those.
how i wish i could be a successful photographer like you. btw, ANTM is cool too. haha.
keep rockin!
Hi…hehe…hi. Well your life seemed full of adventures that I would probably never get to experience…I think that I should’ve studied photography last year since you make it seem so fun and seems very enjoyable.

You are the sexiest guy I’ve ever seen on T.V.
Wonderful photographer, but just super sexy.
Hi Nigel! It’s nice to find out more about you by reading your entries rather than just watching you from ANTM. I’m from the Philippines and a fan of the show. Don’t just photos in your blog, you should have a photo gallery here! Come on, indulge! This site is all about you!!!
Hi Nigel!
I recently was able to have an oppurtunity of a lifetime by meeting you at the Academy of Art Fashion Show in New York over the weekend. It was more then a pleasure meeting you! I am a student at AAU so I hope you enjoyed the show. It was my first time at Bryant Park meeting you made it the best! I can’t wait for ANTM and was so happy to see you have a blog! Keep it up! Your work is amazing…..
Hello all.
I am a flag-waving American citizen who
somehow landed in the Middle East and I
am looking for a way out.
(its a long story with lots of sordid details:
cheating spouse, dysfunctional inlaws,
deceipt and underhandedness...it might make a very interesting movie).
Anyway, hello to everyone and I look forward to sharing
my international experiences with all of you
in the coming months.
Hello Nigel,
I look up to you as a role model. You inspire me with your photography. I am actually practicing photography (I call it a hobby, though) and made a few good shots.
I hope to be like you someday.
Keep it up!
Hola Nigel:
En realidad me alegra mucho haber encontrado esta pà gina y poder saber mà s de tu trabajo… Creo que eres un gran fotògrafo y por lo que he leìdo tambièn una gran persona…
Saludos
Nigel,
To be completely honest, I am not a fan of fashion and never was. Honestly, I could care less about it. As such, I am not a watcher of ANTP (please don’t hold this against me) and, even worse, had no clue who you were, that is, until your work supporting the HSUS’ efforts to put a stop to the cruel and barbaric seal hunts in Canada brought you into my periphery.
It has been said that the true measure of a man’s (or woman’s) character can be gauged by how he or she treats god’s “lesser” creatures. As a staunch and long-time supporter of animal rights (as well as defender of just about anything else deemed “helpless” – like children and the elderly) this is a creed by which I have made a conscious choice to live my life.
It is unfortunate that we’re living in a world and time that seems to be conflicted and confused about what is, and is not, truly important. A world, if you will, that seems to place a higher value on tangible material goods than on living creatures.
Now, please don’t misinterpret me here…I’m not some off the wall fanatic (well, not most days anyway…). It’s just that as a result of reading about you, I was at once struck and impressed by the apparent depth and breadth of your character and dedication, and as such, felt compelled to write.
However, I do not wish to digress from the main reason for this missive, which is to extend a deeply heart-felt and most sincere “thanks” for taking the time to lend your fame and impressively wide range of talents to help bring this very worthy cause into sharper focus within the public eye.
Hopefully, with your help and influence, we can bring to an end, once and for all, this and many other barbaric and completely unnecessary cruel practices that many poor creatures are made to suffer and endure at the hands of man.
I am confident and hopeful that that you will continue to serve as an example for more people like yourself, those with some measure of fame and influence, to help increase awareness of animal cruelty issues like this and others.
Kudos to you…and please keep up the good work!
Respectfully,
Mark DiRollo
Norwalk, CT
I want to let you know that I am very happy that someone of your status has taken the time to put the seal issue in action. You have made in a difference in educating people of what is going on in Canada. You are a wonderful person for helping.
Dear Nigel,
I whole heartedly aggree with Mark from Norwalk on your wonderful dedication to the seals in Canada. It breaks my heart to think of what is about to happen, again. I live in the US now, but I’m from Nova Scotia originally. This seal hunt has been going on at least since the 70’s, and the committee discussions about the benefits and the time honoured tradition of the fisherman and how they have vet’s who give them advice and the hunt is done humamely. This is how the Department Fisheries and Oceans sees it. Makes my skin crawl personally. There was an article in the New York Times earlier this week that the DFO has actually increased the amount they can brutally kill by 5,000. The total number is staggering. Just because the population is not danger of depletion, it is beyond me how someone can so cruelly kill these gentle pups. While most of the world shouts out against these atrocities, the “fisherman” go out and do these horrible things. Most decent Canadians are totally against it.
The DFO has no intention of stopping this. Apparently the poor Honourable Prime Minister Stephen Harper has neither the will nor the authority to stop this.
Letters really have limited effect. The DFO has no respect for them, they suggested the Humane Society go find some eco tourism to protmote and returned the $10,000 the Canadian Humane Society sent them to help buy back the hunting licenses of the fisherman who do this in their off season.
Probably the only way this thing will end is if either the hunters themselves grow a spark of humanity or Green Peace shows up to physically block the hunt.
My next letter is to Green Peace.
Thank you for listening Nigel, I wish we had more of you in the world. It would be a better place,
Sincerely,
Michele Neese
Hi Nigel-thank you so much for all the work you have done with the seals and the children of the world. I am an ovarian cancer survivor(9yrs now), yet my biggest dream in life was to have a huge family- 5 boys to be exact! Well- that never came to pass although I did become a foster Mom to a baby boy about 8 yrs ago. Our relationship ended due to complications, yet my heart continues to go out to babies and animals- any helpless being who is under abuse or distress. At this point in my life I am self employed- I have a “green business” that consists of cleaning homes, offices with no chemicals, and now we are en route to distribution with our organic product. I hope in the near future I can continue, as you have with helping the helpless in such a big way. Thank you,
Beth

Nigel,
I’m taking a photography class (which is quite expensive) as one of my electives, and I’m doing a biography on you because I think your work(s) are amazing! And I love the hit show ANTM.
Hi,
Normally I work in the Swedish parliament, but this year I will be an at -home – mum with our
first baby. During this time I follow Top Model
nad I must say this programme is making probably much more against racial prejudices in this country
than we as politicians could imagine!
Being an adoptive child from Sri Lanka in this country is also a lot of lacking role models – the show is very popular here and your participation
has given myself and many other adoptive children
of Sri Lanka great pride of our country of origin (even if we of course are Swedes – the new generation of Swedes with black hair and brown eyes). You have done much more to contribute to that than you probably can imagine.
Thank you!
Regards,
Jenny
PS: Do you think in the future there will be
a Sri Lankian Elle magazine?
Hey, I just wanted to thank you for your support of the seals in Canada. What they are doing out there is sick and inhumane, and there are alot of us who would love to be out there standing up for the seals. Its great to know that you give your time to help stop the slaughter of these innocent animals. I am now an even bigger fan
Nigel, I was your driver in the Pegasus Parade in Louisville last week and have some photos I would like to send you, if you could give me an email address or whatever to get these to you….Blue Corvette driver…Paul Barrick, Ky.
Nigel, I have followed you since you were on ANTM and have researched you many times in relation to your work for my coarse as I am nearing the end of a photography and digital imaging diploma. I am overwhelmed by the work you are doing in raising awareness of many social and enviromental issues that we all take for granted. My coarse had made me realise how powerfull photography is as a medium. My final major is based on the global socialogical issue of domestic violence and would like to progress into the type of work that you have been doing.
Nothing is more rewarding than actually seeing it first hand and witnessing the realities we watch on TV and read in papers.
Cheers
R.Pearce
If you are in London between the 12th to 15th June our class in exhibiting our graduate show at the Free Range Gallery in The Old Truman Brewery, 15, Hanbury Street, london E1
I love your style and skill. I have two boys, 4 and 7 weeks. I would love for you to take professional pictures of them. How much do you charge? Please email me: isaac4312@yahoo.com
I think you’re an amazing photographer & love your images. although, I haven’t been watching ANTM from the start…I’ve caught up to it recently..and I respect your expert advice. It’s awesome.
I’m a professional Dancer/Choreographer in Chicago, IL. I’ve always been interested in photography..but just in the last couple of years..I’ve taken it more seriously. I do hope to do freelance..and get in fashion photo. I’d appreciate ALL advice from such an expert as yourself. Pleas, when you have a moment..chek out my websites and images. Remember, I’m not PRO yet..but I’m working on it AND building a portfolio, starting w/my NIKON d40x.
thank you for taking the time.

i am in need of advice really… my 18yr old son wants to get into modeling…. how do I as a parent help him sort out the ‘good’ agents from all the ‘bad’ ones? quite a few seem to want money up front to join their agency – this I was concerned with, and advised not to do.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Idea: Why not run a male version of NTM?? – UK based for us obviously
Regards
Terry
Hi Nigel…
I am in need of some advise about photography. i love it so much!! i am studying grphici design, but i see my passion is very much towards photography. the thing is though, i really dont kno much about the best cameras to use, or you know, the basic stuff. i take a lot of wedding pcitures and quinceanera pics (sweet 15) and i only use a regular digital camera, pics come out nice, but i love the work you do. i am so inspired from a lot of your work. i dont know if there is some type of advice you could give me. i would very much appreciate it. thank you.
thank you for your time,
Graciela Lagunas
Hi Nigel (if you are reading this at all),
i think your blog is really interesting, and I enjoyed watching you on ANTM. But most of all I appreciate your ecological and social efforts.
Terry, I think the idea of male ANTM is great. I think it would be very interesting to see male models competing… About agencies: I think no good agency collects money in advance. They first invest in you (of course later they get all the invested money back). OK, some of them want to have some money in advance-it depends on the amount they wanted…
Regards.
hi Mr. Nigel
I suppose that the most admiring words toward describing your work are said here by the other commenter’s.
I find your life fabulous and the way all of us people need to live it, with joy, hard work and hope. Add on that, never forgetting that with fame we can make things better and not worth.
I will continue to read your blog and wish to find out your secret to having a successful life, inclusive not getting tempted by all glamour around your every day life basis. That makes you even hotter that HOT
cheers
Nahal from Sweden
Hi Nigel. I read in ‘Wikipedia’, that like me, you ‘re ‘Mixed -raced’.
It ‘d be cool, if you join my ‘MySpace’.
Love -Mike.
Well! What a nice surprise to find that the very handsome and talented Nigel Barker is also active in humanitarian projects, and a family man as well. I look forward to returning to your site for updates on your charity work.
ANTM is fun to watch on occasion, but this is much more interesting and worthwhile.
Hi Nigel,
I think what you’re doing is fantastic. Also one of your biggest fans from America’s Next Top Model.
Just wondering if you were interested in attending Fiji Fashion Week 09: Dec 2-6, 2009.
We would pay for your flight and have you stay at the Fiji Beach Resort and Spa Managed by the Hilton.
Please let me know if you are interested.
Kind Regards,

Hi Nigel. I am from Poland and I love love love love your person and everything what U do. Sorry, my english is not good
It will be nice if U send me e-mail
Kiss.
I think you are incredibly intelligent and talented. I have always been interested in photography, and if you ever out there looking for an PA, or an apprentice. I’d be thrilled if you would email me for a copy of my resume. I believe that I have a good eye for photography and I’d love an opportunity to learn from someone as talented and understanding of the human psyche ad how it affects the finished product. I’ve seen a few photographers who were smashing, but didn’t have a clue about how to get the subject to open up to the camera.
Cheers!
Hi Nigel,
I’m a growing photographer, and I’m looking to publish a book this summer based off a photo study I did throughout the year. I am very inspired by your work, and was wondering if you had any advice! Thanks and congratulations on everything you have accomplished thus far.
Sara
Were you in Grand Rapids, Michigan last night? I saw someone who looked IDENTICAL to you if you weren’t. And if you were by chance there, I was the security guard staring at you in front of the parking ramp trying to figure out where I recognized you from.
Hello Nigel,
I went to see the photos from the baby seals and after couple of tears I went and got 2 shirts one for me and the other for my husband. I am a graphic designer that have realized that my real passion is photography and what I want in my life is to give the best of me to the world. When I saw the exposition showing the beuty and sweetness of the baby seals it was extremely inspiring for me, I love the campain you guys made and the effect it has caused in all of us and the effect that it will still be making.
My home country is Bolivia and I have a campain idea, I wish I could talk about it with you and receive some advise about it, I want to make people concious about animals too, and I must say that sometimes it is not an easy thing to do, so it was amazing to see what your team and you have done for does baby seals.
thank you
Dari
I hate writing on blogs, but i’ve always admired your work and your wife ( but from what i read she doesnt shoot photos) so i thought this was worth you knowing. From what i’ve heard many have found you through America’s Next Top Model, but not me. haha i actually found you by looking up your wife on google( i saw her on a magazine pregnant and wanted to know who she was). i wanted to know about her so i read and thought well she must (needs to have) a handsome husband. and well there you are. truely i didn’t even read your about me because… well im tired and dont feel like it. i looked through your pictures though. i just wrote this because i wanted you to know that your not known just because of ANTM, though i did start watching it because of you ( about 10 cycles late), but because of who you are. and so far i agreed with all your criticism.
sorry for boring you
peace. “)
I just wanted to tell you that your story as well as your photos inspires me so much to continue perusing my dreams. I am in school right now to become a photographer in hopes of one day following down your photography footsteps. I just want to think you for sharing your story.

Hi Nigel,
Just wanted to say that although much of your accomplishments are due to your endless hard work, I also think it’s your terrific personality. I enjoy ANTM because it is a classy show and is not about belittling or embarassing contestants like so many other reality shows. You seem like a really sweet person so never change. And thanks for sharing your inspiring stories.

Dear Nigel, I’m from Chile (South America) and I’ve just recently discovered your website and your blog. I’m amazed with your talent, your vision and your ability to portrait anyone, man or female, in a natural, gorgeous yet edgy way. You make it look sooo easy, but something tells me it’s quite the other way around hehehe. Well, I’m absolutely in-loved with your work and with what you and your family do for others who are less fortunate. Thank you for sharing all of this with us.

From Kate Barker, England
You are such a fantastic photographer, and a truly class act. I love watching you on ANTM. I have a question. My daughter had horrific acne as a child, and was in a car accident, so she is shy in front of a camera. How do I encourage her to take a good picture that will be flattering to her fair, scarred skin?
Never realised you came from around Salisbury.
Great photographer, love all your work.
Going to try selling some of my images, any advice?
When are you going to exhibit in the UK?
Hi Nigel
I am a teacher in England and my colleague (who loves you) got me (& now my husband)hooked on ANTM in the UK and are now watching re-runs!
My colleague is leaving at the end of this school year (July) and I wondered if you would send a signed photo of yourself to us, her name is Rosie.
If I could have one for me & my husband (Rebecca & Alex) that would be amazing too.
Keep up the good work.
Rebecca
Keep up the good work
Hey, Nigel. I absolutely love your work! I, too, want to become a professional photographer and I was just wondering, what program do you use for direct camera from your camera to your laptop or computer?
You should make a blog post about the program!
Hi, I’m Renee from Sunbury College I’m in year 10. I have a research assignment on a photographer of my choice and I was wondering would you be able to answer some of these questions..
Have you had any formal training on photography before you started it as a career?
What influences your work?
Whats your feild of photography?
Do you have any special techniques or use any equiptment?
Thanks Renee

Nigel, my daughter did a photo shoot for MAKE A WISH with you in January 2009. We were told she would be in your book. I tried contacting MAKE A WISH for over a month now to confirm. We signed the waiver saying her photo could be released in your book, but have not heard a confirmation. I hate to bother you here, but I want to know if she is so that I can get all Of Huntsville, Al to go out and buy your book!!!
Hi, Nigel! I admire you as a person, I like your creation. I never was interested in the life of some stars, you changed my world view. I fell in love with your talent. I am familiar with many photographers, but you surpass them all. I am fashion model from Russia, I live in St. Petersburg and I have a dream, someday work with you.
With love, Ekaterina
