Girl Be Heard (previously called Project Girl Performance Collective), an organization that uses theater as a vehicle to empower young women (ages 12-21) to become brave, confident, socially conscious leaders, is celebrating the launch of its new name and expanded mission with a special event hosted by me at The Cutting Room in New York City. The inspired evening is open to the public and kicks-off at 6:00pm on January 28, 2013 with a special performance by the current members of Girl Be Heard.
“Our name change reflects our growth and evolution from a tiny home-based grassroots group to a global movement,” explains Ashley Marinaccio, Founder/Artistic Director of Girl Be Heard. “We have always believed in the power of theatre and storytelling to change lives, minds, and hearts and are honored and thrilled to see so many celebrities, institutions and global human rights organizations seeing what we see and supporting our work.”
Gloria Steinem, a long time supporter of the organization, has come out to lend her voice to this event, inviting the public and media to “join in the truth-telling as told by clear voices of girls before pretense or pressure have quieted them.” She continues, “They will inform, delight, alarm and help you to reawaken that authentic voice that still lives within you.”
From New York stages to the White House, tour de force productions, written and performed by the young women of Girl Be Heard, continue to inspire audiences to become change-makers in their communities. Under the mentorship of renowned directors, playwrights, activists and intellectuals like Executive Director, Jessica Greer Morris, one of Newsweek’s 2012 “150 Fearless Women Who Shake The World”, Girl Be Heard’s wildfire, youth-led activism raises awareness about issues affecting girls both here and across the globe.
“Listening to the performers of Girl Be Heard wax poetic on the issues that face young women and humanity at large with such clarity and punch is awe inspiring to say the least.”

that is such an awesome thing to do! young girls today need empowerment more than ever! Girls are compared to ultra thin extremely thin women on tv and movies and they begin to think that no one will likethem unless they are the same way. I know…I went through that same thing as a teen and am still battling issues of the same. I used to take laxatives, water pills, id make myself vomit and other things to lose weight and try to be the type of women that was portrayed as what all men wanted and all women should be. but I learned to love myself and am still working on that. but young girls should know that they are beautiful as is. and they need that life isn’t just about looks but whats inside and the fight, will and heart we have needs to shine thru!!! you rock Nigel. your charities and organizations are great! I admire you.
