Human(e)

On Friday night, we traveled to Washington DC for the annual TAFA event hosted by the HSUS. It’s a great event, bringing together the top minds in animal rights activism with a series of workshops, presentations and speeches from authors, politicians and even comedians and reality TV show judges……! My presentation, titled ‘Human(e),’ was well received, and I was honored with an impromptu standing ovation – always nice! The basic message is one that the Humane Society of the United States whole-heartedly agrees with: To truly be humane, you need to be considerate and compassionate to all of the animal kingdom, including ourselves. We as a species are not advanced just because we are more intelligent and creative, but because we have the potential and the ability to be humane.
I discussed my work with the Protect Shark campaign and the Protect Seal Campaign to clearly emphasize my point. For example, sharks don’t hunt us down in organized groups, as the movies Jaws and Deep Blue Sea would have you believe. They also wouldn’t specifically bite off your hand and let you drift off to bleed to death while your dismembered part is being served as an aphrodisiac in a steaming, hot bowl of soup. Oh, wait a second. That’s what we do! Shark fin soup, anyone? Certainly, sharks don’t go out searching for the largest human they can kill only to bring it back to the their dock, hang it and quarter it in front of a jeering crowd of hammerheads. That would be horrific! But wait a second, isn’t that what we do during Monster Shark tournaments? Now as for what some humans are willing to do to baby seals… well, do I really need to? Search my blog under HSUS to read more on that. My point isn’t just to question our validity as a humane species, but rather, it is to encourage everyone to see how appalling we behave all too often at the expense of innocent creatures.
