Porbeagle sharks gain protection!

Posted on March 24, 2010 - Filed Under HSUS, Personal Picts

Yesterday, I shared some disturbing news with you about the failed efforts of the U.S.-backed proposal to protect hammerhead and white tip sharks from overfishing and poaching in our oceans. The proposal was narrowly defeated at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. In total, eight shark species were brought to the floor in hopes of protection through the regulation of trading rules. Of eight, only one received approval. The trade of porbeagle sharks, which have declined more than 80 percent in the northeast and southwest Atlantic Ocean, will be monitored. Fishermen have targeted these poor creatures for their ment, fins and oil. Although this is a small victory for endangered species everywhere, it is still not enough. Seven species of shark failed to receive the protections they so desperately need. There are ways to get involved, however. Click here for a list of petitions you can sign to help stop shark finning.

Last Chance to see is a phenomenal series which explores the endangered creatures of the world.

I include a link to you tube, in which the killing of sharks, has lead to squid over populating an area.
