The 21st Annual GLAAD Meida Awards, 2010

This past weekend, I was asked to present at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York City. The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives. The event personally raised my level of awareness, and I was touched by the hard work and efforts displayed by so many to strengthen and amplify the voice of the GLBTQ community. Jay Manuel (of ANTM) and Jill Zarin (of Real Housewives of NYC) joined me in presenting the opening reel, ‘Year in Review.’ Event honorees included Joy Behar and Cynthia Nixon, who both gave compelling, poignant speeches. Perhaps my favorite of the night came from 11-year-old Will Phillips who accepted an award (along with CNN) for the CNN segment, “Why Will Won’t Pledge Allegiance.” There is a lot to be said about the many who are involved with the GLAAD organization.
