Vipp is celebrating its 70th anniversary by hosting a charity auction in New York City in collaboration with design retailer Design Within Reach (DWR). The auction will benefit DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS.

I was approached to add my inspiration for a trash can with other participating designers Ami James, Avi Adler, Calvin Klein, Camilla Stærk, Cole and Garrett, David Rockwell, David Stark, Evette Rios, Helena Christensen, Izhar Patkin, James Charles, Jes Gordon, John Baldessari, Jonas Hecksher/E-types, Lady Bunny, Lady Pink, Magnus Berger, Michael Aram, Mike Perry, Olaf Breuning, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Kiril Kirov/Razortooth, Richard Colman, Rikke Korff/The Furies, Robert Geller, Robert Verdi, Shelly Sabel, Sune Rose Wagner/ The Raveonettes, Swathi Ghanta/Kidrobot, The Selby, Veronica Webb, Yoko Ono, Yves Béhar/Fuseproject.

Trash is normally described as unwanted waste material and therefore your trash-can should be your best friend so to speak…… Having spent weeks up on the ice in Northern Canada for the Humane Society of the United States documenting the the birth and hunt of the baby Harp seals, I decided to wrap the Vipp bin in a photo called ‘Frozen Cauldron.’ It depicts the change in landscape as the beautiful, perfect, icy landscape metamorphoses into a frozen explosion before it melts away to nothing. Sadly a couple of years ago and perhaps due to global warming the ice melted away 2 weeks earlier than usual drowning hundreds of thousands of baby seals still not old enough to swim. Therefore the concept was to provoke people to think about the climactic effects that waste and refuse are having on our environment and encourage folk to recycle…

Public viewing and bidding from October 15 – 28 at DWR: Tools for Living in New York City. Gala auction to be held October 28.
