Having successfully taken our film “A Sealed Fate?” across the US and to two film festivals – Sundance and the Toronto Film Festival, we were ready for Europe. This past year has been quite a roller coaster for everyone campaigning on behalf of the seals but not without reward. We were overjoyed when the European Union passed a resolution banning the import of all seal products into Europe. Of course that doesn’t mean the Canadian fisherman on the East coast won’t slaughter the seals this coming Spring. So, as a part of our campaign to apply pressure on the Canadian Government to offer the fishermen a viable alternative like eco-tourism and buying out their sealing licenses, we opened our film and exhibition celebrating these beautiful animals by expanding our boycott. The Boycott of Canadian Seafood has been overwhelmingly successful in the US with over 6000 restaurants, chefs and supermarkets signing up. It is definitely a last resort measure but if graphic imagery and honest testimony from 1000’s of people who have witnessed the hunt won’t sway the authorities then we have no option but make it a financial issue as much as a moral one.
So, the film is opening in Brussels, Amsterdam, Prague, Barcelona, Rome and London for starters. We flew over last week for the opening in Brussels with DJ Josh Madden, brother of the famed Good Charlotte band and of course Dr. John Grandy and Pat Regan of HSUS.

After Brussels, we headed for Amsterdam. The opening was being held at this spectacular old building, constructed in the 1600’s! It was transformed into a photo gallery with a large HD screen playing the “A Sealed Fate?” We welcomed a great audience with several Dutch celebrities in attendance. The opening was being hosted by a Dutch animal protection foundation called ‘Bunt Voor Dieren.’ One of the reasons in my opinion the campaign has been so successful, is that so many organizations have banded together in solidarity for the seals with resounding results. We all to often draw lines in the sand and say I’m from here and your from that side of the line. Well, the seals belong to the world and don’t abide by country lines. Unfortunately for them, they migrate to Eastern Canada every year to give birth in an area in the Gulf Of Saint Lawrence that should be safe with ideal weather conditions….. I hope that some day soon Canada will learn to celebrate these beautiful animals and not slaughter them in such a wretched and pointless manner for nothing more than their pelts. Great to hear that “A Sealed Fate” has gone to Europe!

I personally saw the exhibit at Zune LA in May 2009 and still can’t get over how absolutely beautiful these seals are. There is one photo in particular of a ragged jacket called “over easy” tha I immediately fell in love with.

For those of you reading this… go see this exhibit and film. It is well worth your time. You will not regret it.
