Surprise Party

As far as surprise parties go or in fact any kind of party this is how you do it!! The party was celebrating my good friend Pamella Roland’s 50th birthday. And in true style and panache Dan DeVos, her husband of 27 years, organized a party of parties…… First of all the planning started in the Fall of 2008. Dan and a team of people who work for the DeVos family headed by Jessica secured that date for the party and rounded up all her NYC friends and brought us all over on their G5…… Well the party was being held at their family hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan so walking wasn’t an option! We arrived to a blizzard of the kind only places like Grand Rapids can boast about but that did not slow anything down. In fact we were met at the private hanger by a VIP tour bus that whisked us away to the hotel. At 7 PM we all showed up at the Ballroom of the neighboring hotel ( Also a DeVos property), where the event had been broken down into a series of rooms that were revealed as the night progressed. We started in the Veuve Cliquot room as Pamella likes to start every party with a glass of her favorite Champagne…..I can’t argue with that! It was in this room that Pamella arrived to jaw-dropping surprise and plenty of tears. We moved 45 minutes later into the Japanese themed room with full sushi bar, rice paper walls, bamboo flooring the whole nine yards!! This was trumped only by the next room – the NYC room, with a modern theme and models in Pamella Roland gowns adorning the walls like photos except they were the real girls in alcoves built into the walls – the clincher being that Harry Connick Junior showed up to serenade Pamella and who knew he was such a wit too?! The evening was rounded off by another great live band singing the best hits of the past 50 years….. All in all there wasn’t a single guest that attended that could of left feeling anything other than WOW!!!

Hi Nigel;
I just heard a few moments ago that you had blogged about the party. I’m thrilled to hear you had such a wonderful time!
It was an honor to plan and design this event for Pamella and her family and friends. This party was definitely a highlight for our firm!
Warmest regards,
