Free Arts NYC provides under-served children and families with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs that help them to foster the self-confidence and resiliency needed to realize their fullest potential. Mary Alice Stephenson, who some of you might remember as the host of “America’s Smartest Model” and is Harper’s Bazaar contributing fashion editor invited me to help contribute to this year’s Free Arts NYC Kidsfest. Mary Alice and I have worked together granting wishes for the Make A Wish foundation and we seem to collaborate on philanthropic projects more than fashion! Well Kidsfest as you can see from the photos is a festival of face painting, music, singing and all manner of artful endeavors for tots. My son Jack had a blast as did I. I got to play, I mean shoot one of my most favorite cameras – Polaroid’s 20×24 camera; Imagine a camera that stands 5-feet (150 cm) high and weighs 235 pounds (106 kg). Big, bulky and beautiful! At least that’s what people say about it, especially after seeing the gorgeous, superbly detailed, color and black-and-white 20×24-inch (50×60 cm) prints it produces. Generous guests who paid $1000.00 a photo stood for portraits with me and what a whirlwind it was! The camera requires that you use a serious amount of flash power and even at F32-64 you have only a few inches of depth of field. So photographing group shots and children high on cup cakes and candy meant I had my work cut out for me! If you so much as move off your mark an inch you throw the whole shot out of focus……. Nonetheless we prevailed and had a very successful shoot. Be sure to check out Free Arts NYC and come join us next year at Kidsfest
