The life and times of Nigel Barker

Larger Than Life

Avedon has always been an inspiration for me, his passion, his process and his dedication to the art form of photography are second to none. He turned the fashion industry on it’s head in the 1940s by photographing models frolicking on the beach, barefoot and gloveless at a time when models were only shot in a conservative, statuesque and post war era style. His chosen style of portrait photography was unforgiving, real and ultimately timeless.
So it was with great pleasure that last week I flew to Grand Rapids, Michigan to deliver a lecture on Avedon to 600 members of the GRAM. The GRAM is a beautiful museum built in a green, environmentally constructive manner in the heart of Grand Rapids. I was brought down by my friend Pamella Roland who is a benefactor of the museum. It’s fantastic to see a life’s work by an artist such as Avedon under one roof and an even greater pleasure to discuss my passion on the subject

I have to admit Avedon is quite an inspiration to me as well. I think it was very fitting that they chose you to give the lecture… You and Avedon are alike im many ways…

    Hello, Mr. Barker

I just wanted to say congratulations to you and your wife on her pregnancy! I know the baby will have both of your good looks, but also pray she is healthy. Your gorgeous face and accent are the reasons i began to watch ANTM. I like how you stay professional in the show, never resorting to being rude to the models.
