Capitol Hill & the HSUS

On Monday I traveled to Washington DC to visit the headquarters of The Humane Society of The United States and speak to members of Congress on Capitol Hill about the Protect Seals campaign. As usual it was a whirlwind trip meeting hundreds of people. We screened our documentary “A Sealed Fate?” for the HSUS staff in the morning and signed posters of the baby harp seals at their HQ in Gaithersburg . That afternoon we went to Capitol Hill and spoke to various members of Congress and State representatives about the the dreadful annual seal hunt off the Canadian East coast. The House of Representatives has passed an unanimous resolution urging the Canadian Government to ban the commercial seal hunt and we are now working on the US Senate to do the same. We believe there is just one Senator who has put a hold on the resolution……..
On another note, while I was at HSUS headquarters speaking with Patricia Forkan ( the President of HSI) she mentioned how excited they were for the upcoming film “Battle In Seattle” with Charlize Theron, Ray Liotta and Martin Henderson. It’s a drama depicting the riots and chaos that went down at the WTO summit in Seattle in 1999. The HSUS was present at the time dressed as green turtles and 32 turtles were arrested for peaceful demonstrations. Funnily enough I was going and have subsequently attended the premiere of the film yesterday! Patricia gave me T-shirts that they had made in 1999 for the demonstrations that I brought to the premiere and gave to both the director Stuart Townsend and lead actor Martin Henderson.

It’s a very well acted film and highly recommend you check it out.
One more thing before I sign off – I urge you to join us in supporting Proposition 2, the California Prevention of Farm Cruelty Act, which will appear on November’s statewide ballot – visit YESonProp2.com

All I can say is Bless You for continuing the battle!!!!!!!!!
I just wanted readers to know that this ‘hunt’ is not an act of the native Inuit, but one of the greedy. This website [http://liberationbc.org/issues/seal_hunt] is useful and, bizarrely enough, originates from British Columbia which is a province of Canada located on the west coast. So, this matter is definitely a national concern within Canada.
I think it’s awesome that as a photographer, Nigel is expressing the concerns of HSUS in an accessible medium. I didn’t know how involved he was/is with HSUS! One more gold star, right next to the one for the moon-lit exposures done for American Photo. Fashion and charity, I dig it, I do :]
Dear Nigel Barker,
My name is Mona, I am in high school, and I am so impressed at how much you have done for the seals. I am also trying to help end the seal hunt and I have donated money and I bought your shirt that you designed for the seals.
I read today that you are speaking to congress about ending the seal hunt. That is so great and cool.
I wish I could do something that big for the seals! I wanted to write a letter but I couldn’t find an address where you receive those types of letters so I decided to write on your website. I hope you get this just so you can know that there are a lot of people that think what you are doing for the seals is great. Thank you so much for doing this. Keep working!! If you ever needed any help send me an email please because I am looking to get really involved in the ending the seal hunt.
