A SEALED FATE?

Posted on July 28, 2008 - Filed Under Charity, HSUS, Nigel Barker Today, Personal Picts, Photography, Studio NB, Travel Shoots

The opening night was a huge to do! It was very heart warming to see so many celebrities, fashionistas, HSUS members, personal friends and international press walking the white carpet and there to lend their support for “A Sealed fate ?” . We ended up extending the party by an hour to accommodate the sheer number of people who attended and I hope that as well as have a fun evening, people left with a better appreciation for Harp Seals and their unfortunate yearly fate.
The exhibit consists of photos from our trip to the ice floes of Eastern Canada and although I did shoot photos of the hunt I did not display any at the exhibition. Rather it is a celebration of these wonderful animals in their striking environment over a two week period from birth up until the hunt. We also put together a documentary of our trip to the ice, the inner workings of the HSUS and the hunt in action which obviously does have a graphic nature to it….

We had many hundred more people show up all weekend long for the guided tours I was giving. I thought it was important for people to not just see my images but hear directly from my mouth how I felt on the ice and with these animals and of course what actually went down at the hunt. There is so much hearsay and misinformation about the treatment of these young seals and I was and am determined to clear up any confusion!

My team and I were on the ice for the birth of the seals and stayed up there for 2 weeks until 2 days after the hunt began, photographing and documenting everything we saw.

We also interviewed locals and fisherman that participate in the hunt in order to cover all angles.
Many people also purchased prints from me, bought posters and T-shirts with all the profits being donated to the Humane Society of the United States. It is our hope that this successful and informative exhibit will get to tour nationwide and that many folk will get to see how wonderful Harp seals are and hear the many possible alternatives and suggestions we have to stop the barbaric seal hunt that takes place every year.
For for information on the hunt please see my earlier blog entries and visit www.protectseals.org

I have to admit… have been checking the site all day today and waiting for this post.

Glad to hear it went great and I really hope there is the nationwide tour. It is truly wonderful what you have created with this exhibit and your personal tour. I’ve said it before, but here it is again… THANK YOU!

Really wish I could have been there to experience it myself.

Nigel, it was simply a pleasure to meet and talk with you on Sunday. Your activism inspires us all and I applaud you for trying to give back to this world. You are an inspiration. Please let me know if you ever need help with anything, volunteer work, design fliers/brochures (I used to be a designer), etc.

Thank you so much, and may we cross paths again.
    Quavondo
